In the news: Tesla Battery Factory Tour

Tesla Motors, an American-based automotive and energy storage company that designs, manufactures, and sells luxury electric cars, electric vehicle powertrain components, and battery products is opening a secret new gigafactory in Carson City, Nevada.

In a special tour, ten state lawmakers were shown the factory and met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Lyndon Rive, founder of SolarCity, a rooftop solar company that Musk is chairman of. Rive spoke to them about the future of Nevada’s energy, something that is at an inflection point currently. He suggested a net metering policy should be enforced to reduce the reliance on centralized fossil fuel plants and increase the use of rooftop solar and storage sources.

Nevada had previously adopted a new rate classification for net metering, in which homeowners received a credit for the excess energy their systems generated. Because the new rates no longer provided incentive to install rooftop solar systems SolarCity lost 550 jobs.

After this, Rive proposed battery storage technology, to allow extra electricity to be returned to the grid when needed. The new factory is looking at battery technology in regards to solar storage in addition to their main goal of producing a lower cost electric car.
